Towcester grew up along Watling Street, the old Roman road that is now the A5. It was a coaching town on the road to Holyhead. The stone and brick houses along the old route through the centre still show it.

Coaching town houses, a castle mound and new homes
The old centre is the Towcester Conservation Area. Many homes here are built of stone. One house at 68 and 70 Watling Street East is a listed ironstone house from the mid 1700s. Older homes like these need wiring that fits round thick walls and old timbers.
Moat Lane changed the town centre. It added 132 new homes plus shops, offices and a community building. It was built round Bury Mount, which is what is left of a motte and bailey castle. The scheme sits inside the conservation area and was finished in 2021.
The town has grown fast. About 2,700 people lived here in 1961. By 2021 it was over 11,500. If your home dates from those years and still has its first fuse board, it is due a check.
Towcester South, also called Towcester Grange, will add more. Plans for 2,750 homes between the A5 and the A43 were approved in 2015. Building is under way.
